Dialogue of urban development practices
UrbanCommunity Experiment Recap (Rotterdam, Netherlands)
This blog was written by our UrbanCommunity experimenter Francisco Santos, with light editing from us. It...
Building an UrbanCommunity for sustainable and just cities in Europe through micro-funds and peer-learning
What does it look like when social justice concerns are integrated into urban sustainability efforts?
Through micro-funds and peer-learning, we recognise, support and share the knowledge and experiences of community-led initiatives and local governments who are acting locally to create sustainable and just cities.

In our first UrbanCommunity experiment, The Space continuted our collective approach to commons self-organisation and shared our knowledge with other neighourhood collectives. The experiment invited citizens into continously prefiguring shared spaces for just and sustainable cities.
In a follow up experiment, we led a conference on community-led urban development practices, together with the City of Rotterdam and the Cultuur Campus project.
Together with the Municipality of Erzsébetváros, we will create an experimentation lab to foster just heat adaptation in the neighbourhood, which is dense, highly-sealed surface and low green infrastructure. In the past we co-created, small scale green, modular units for residents to sit down, have a rest in a shady area, grab water and connect.

We will collaborate with Ankara Yenimahalle Municipality to improve the working conditions of open market vendors, primarily a socio-economically disadvantaged group, and to minimize food waste in market areas. Through a participatory process we will create a new spatial design for the market.

In "ReGenea: Giardino" we focus on revitalizing the interior of the historic wall section and adjacent garden in Grosseto, merging heritage preservation with modern urban needs. This project envisions transforming the historic areas into vibrant, functional spaces that reflect community values and heritage, fostering environmental sustainability, social inclusion, and cultural vitality.

We want to make our neighbourhood climate-robubst and climate-proof through collective renewable energy or heating infrastructure, adaptation measures and friendly street design for vulnerable users. With the help of a visual artist we will form many future scenarios for our neighbourhood, get inputs from the City's district manager, and test our ideas against the visions and objectives of the City of Ghent.
Based on our experience with Municipalities in Transition, we will give practical governance training to political staff of Valsamoggia on several models (Sociocracy 3.0, Cynefin) that promise to transform the way decisions are made and policies are formed.
